Rollerstart’s Inspiring Journey to the British Championships

Rollerstart, based in Stevenage, is more than just a place to learn how to roller skate. It’s a community where beginners turn into champions. They believe in the joy of skating and the thrill of competition, and have an incredible journey to share.

Where It All Began

“In 2016, a six-year-old girl walked into Rollerstart”, Malcolm, the founder tells us.  “She was a complete beginner but had a spark that couldn’t be ignored. She was both talented and a bit daring. Her enthusiasm and energy caught our attention right away. We saw potential in her, and she quickly fell in love with roller speed skating, a sport that’s definitely not for the faint-hearted.”

Fast forward to 2023, and that same girl has achieved something extraordinary. She became a British champion and set a British record in the longest race for her age category. It’s a story of hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport.

Bea, the proud mother of this British champion is active in the team and will encourage anyone to come and join in:

“My daughters achievements in the last year have been truly remarkable, she has worked very hard and her efforts have certainly been rewarded. A British Champion, 3 x British record holder and representing her country with the Team GB development squad, it’s what dreams are made of, I’m immensely proud of her!”

“All our skaters put in maximum effort and have such a positive mental attitude which is a big part of their success. It’s so rewarding to see their progress from a complete beginner to watching them race, I’m so proud of them all!”

From Beginners to Champions

But that’s not all. Another one of Rollerstart’s skaters went from a complete beginner to racing in less than ten months. She’s now fitter, healthier, and showing great promise for the next racing season. Her transformation is a testament to what can be achieved with determination and the right guidance.

“Inspired by these successes,  we decided to start a team. We knew there were regulars who were eager to give it a go. So, in January 2024, the Herts Roller Speed Team was born. With 13 dedicated members, we have already made a mark in every competition we’ve entered this season.”

Medals and More Medals

The new team has won medals at every competition so far. This success has been a fantastic motivator for all their members. It’s not just about winning – it’s about the journey, the camaraderie, and the fun they have along the way.

They now have a second British champion representing their team.

“Watching our skaters grow and achieve their dreams is incredibly rewarding. It’s proof that with the right support, anything is possible.” says Malcolm, proudly.

International Success

One the groups proudest moments came when their first member represented their country. She joined the Team GB development squad and competed in Germany in April 2024. There, she broke a couple of British records. It was an incredible achievement and a huge honour for her and the whole team at Rollerstart.

“Seeing one of our own compete on an international stage is an experience we cherish. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our skaters and coaches.”

The Rollerstart Community

Rollerstart isn’t just about competitions and records. It’s also about community. Every Friday evening, they hold open leisure sessions where anyone can come and enjoy skating. These sessions are a great way for beginners to get started and for more experienced skaters to practice and have fun. It’s a time for everyone to come together, share their love for skating, and just enjoy themselves.

“We teach beginners how to roller skate, helping them build confidence and skills. Many of our competitive skaters started in these leisure sessions. It’s a reminder that every champion was once a beginner.”

The team currently consists of 14 girls and 2 boys. They are a daring bunch!

Why Roller-Speed Skating?

You might wonder, why roller speed skating? This sport is thrilling and demanding. It requires speed, precision, and endurance. It’s a fantastic way to stay fit and healthy, and it’s also incredibly fun. For those who enjoy a challenge, it’s the perfect sport.

“At Rollerstart, we’re passionate about roller speed skating because it offers so much. It teaches discipline, builds strength, and fosters a sense of achievement. And when you see the smiles on the skaters’ faces, you know it’s all worth it.”

A Personal Touch

What makes Rollerstart special is the personal touch. The team get to know each of their skaters and tailor their training to their needs. It’s about more than just technique; it’s about building confidence and having fun.

“Our skaters inspire us every day. Their determination and passion remind us why we started Rollerstart. We’re here to support them every step of the way, and we couldn’t be prouder of their achievements.”

Looking to the Future

The team at Rollertart have no plans to slow down. ”We aim to continue growing our team and supporting our skaters in reaching their goals. We’re committed to providing the best training and opportunities for our members. We want to inspire more people to take up skating and discover the joy and benefits it brings.

We also plan to expand our leisure sessions to welcome even more beginners. We believe everyone should have the chance to experience the joy of skating. Whether you’re looking to compete or just have fun, there’s a place for you at Rollerstart.”
