Jim Brown, our Mayor, has had a fascinating journey leading him to public service. With a diverse career that spans several industries, including education, healthcare, and steel manufacturing, he brings a wealth of experience to his role. Jim started as a teacher and later worked in the NHS, British Steel, and Monsanto in research and development. He also had roles at the Welding Institute, three local authorities, and even the Labour Party.

His academic journey is equally impressive. After achieving nine O levels, Jim passed an unusual number of A levels in subjects like maths, physics, chemistry, history, government and politics, sociology, and English law. He earned a B.Sc. in Materials Science from the University of Bradford and a PGCE from Southampton. His education didn’t stop there; he pursued postgraduate qualifications in public administration from Napier (Edinburgh) and social policy from Anglia Ruskin (Cambridge).

Jim’s interest in current affairs sparked long before he left school. This passion for making a positive difference has driven him ever since. As he says, “The motivation to want to make a positive difference to the community and wider has been there for a very long time, and with me, the passion is still there.”

Preparation for the role of Mayor

Jim has been a Stevenage Councillor for eleven years, including a previous term as Mayor during the challenging pandemic period. He’s lived in Stevenage for nearly 33 years and has served as a local school governor for 29 years. His experience with Stirling, Stevenage, and North Herts Councils has given him deep insights into local governance.

In addition to his council roles, Jim was the Equalities Officer and later the Chair of Stevenage Unison. Reflecting on his student days, he mentions, “Long, long ago, I was on the executives of two university student unions – Bradford and Southampton.” These varied roles have equipped him with a broad perspective and a strong commitment to public service.

Core Values

Stevenage has a civic Mayor, not an Executive Mayor like London or Manchester. Jim emphasises the importance of fairness and impartiality in his role. “I chair Council meetings. I must be fair. I must try to get to as many community events as possible,” he notes. His core values are rooted in fairness, community involvement, and a commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents.

Fostering inclusivity and diversity within the Stevenage community?

Jim’s theme for his Mayoral year is “Come Together.” This theme aims to promote inclusivity and diversity through various initiatives. The Mayor’s Charities and good causes are central to this vision. These include the Herts Sports Partnership (Come Together with Sport and Active Recreation), Stevenage Arts Guild (Come Together with Arts, Music and Culture), and People for People (social inclusion). These initiatives aim to bring people together, regardless of their background, and create a more inclusive community.

Jim’s vision for Stevenage is centred on making the town fairer, safer, and greener. He aims to improve social, environmental, and economic well-being, encapsulated in his motto, “Hope not hate.” He is committed to creating well-paid jobs, providing more affordable housing, and protecting the environment. Jim envisions thriving neighbourhoods where public health is promoted, and democratic empowerment is a priority.

The Mayor’s Charities and good causes are at the heart of Jim’s initiatives to strengthen community relations. By supporting the Herts Sports Partnership, Stevenage Arts Guild, and People for People, he aims to foster a sense of community and belonging. These initiatives encourage residents to come together through sports, arts, and social activities, enhancing community involvement and cohesion.

Jim’s message to the residents of Stevenage is clear and hopeful: “The theme for the Mayoral year is Come Together.” This theme contrasts sharply with his previous term during the pandemic, when gathering was impossible. Now, he looks positively to the future, encouraging residents to unite, support one another, and build a stronger community together.

And finally…

When asked about his favourite activity in Stevenage, Jim’s face lights up. “Parkrun is pretty high up there,” he says with enthusiasm. The community spirit and the chance to stay active make Parkrun a highlight of his week.

Jim finds happiness in several simple yet fulfilling activities. Spending time with friends, his partner, daughter, and son is top of the list. He enjoys sixties music, engaging in good discussions, and riding his bike. He even takes on challenges like attempting the London Marathon. But what truly keeps him happy is “making a positive difference” in his community.

In Jim’s words, “The heart of our town lies in its people.” This simple yet profound statement captures the essence of Stevenage. It’s a testament to the collective efforts of the Development Corporation, the Borough Council, and, most importantly, the town’s citizens.
