A Stevenage-based provider of educational resources, 1decision, has been shortlisted for a major national education award. Their innovative materials support children’s personal, social, and emotional development.
1decision, which offers interactive PSHE, Relationships and Health Education, and Personal Development resources, is used in 2,000 schools across 47 counties in the UK and in 19 countries internationally. They are in the running for the Educational Resource Award – Primary at the Education Business Awards 2024. This award recognises innovative products or services that support teaching and increase pupil engagement in primary schools. The winner will be announced on 12th June at the Leonardo Royal London St Paul’s Hotel.
Founded in 2011, 1decision provides schools with engaging, topic-based resources to enhance the delivery of statutory Relationships and Health Education through PSHE. Their materials help Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children prepare for secondary education and life beyond. With resources for children aged 3-11, their whole-school PSHE programme aids both teachers and pupils in navigating through modular content.
Central to their resources are 120 short films and animations. These come with alternative endings, allowing children to explore different outcomes for characters based on their decisions. Topics covered include fire safety, anti-bullying, grief, peer pressure, road safety, and knife crime. The films are supplemented with worksheets, interactive games, printable activities, assembly packs, and a new personal development transition quiz for assessing gaps in PSHE education.
Hayley Sherwood, CEO of 1decision, said: “We are really proud of our achievements over the past 12 years. The longevity of our presence in primary schools shows the positive impact our resources have on pupils’ learning experiences. We’ve supported many schools in achieving ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ ratings for personal development. Being shortlisted for this award recognises the difference we are making.”
For educators, 1decision’s resources are invaluable tools that simplify lesson planning, improve teaching, and create dynamic learning environments. Teachers can easily cater to the diverse needs and learning styles of their students, promoting inclusivity and maximising learning outcomes. These resources also help teachers address complex topics, providing support for personal, social, and emotional development.
Through 1decision, children actively participate in their learning journey, fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and self-expression. The resources nurture essential life skills such as empathy, resilience, and communication, preparing children for a complex world.
Amy Swinburne, a Year 6 teacher and PSHE Lead at William Ransom Primary School in Hitchin, said: “1decision has supported me greatly as a PSHE lead. It has provided tools to analyse PSHE in the school and significantly reduced planning time. The resources are easy to access with prepared slides. The children love the videos and look forward to them in lessons. Teachers feel happy and confident using these resources.”
“The children find the resources engaging and fun. They make them think about important things to keep themselves safe and happy,” added Hazel Lancaster, Assistant Headteacher at Purwell Primary School in Hitchin. “The lessons are inclusive and encourage children to consider what they would do in different situations.”
Bianca Osobu, Head of School at Larwood School in Stevenage, commented: “PSHE is a crucial part of our curriculum. As a special school, we work with children who might not be as emotionally advanced as their age suggests, but we also have children exposed to advanced issues early on. The videos are the most distinctive aspect of the 1decision programme, helping children make good choices.”
