In 2015, Crumbs and Sparkles was born out of adversity. It all started when founder, Melanie Thomas, received a life-altering diagnosis of endometriosis. The journey began unexpectedly when she was rushed to the hospital with what was initially thought to be appendicitis. However, during surgery, doctors discovered a burst endometrioma, leading to a prolonged period of recovery and uncertainty.

During those challenging three weeks away from work, solace and purpose was found in the art of crochet. As Melanie’s body healed, her creative pursuits expanded to include baking, crafting alternative bridal bouquets, and designing accessories. Each subsequent operation, of which there have been six, became a catalyst for acquiring new crafting skills and exploring different artistic mediums.

At the dawn of 2024, a pivotal moment arrived when Melanie realised the need to streamline her efforts and focus on a single product line.

“After careful consideration,” says Melanie, “I honed in on creating unique earrings using polymer clay and exquisite beading techniques. This decision marked a turning point in the evolution of Crumbs and Sparkles, consolidating my passion and expertise into a singular artistic expression.”

Today, Crumbs and Sparkles stands at a significant juncture, showcasing a diverse inventory of high-quality items and a renewed sense of purpose. The business’ journey has culminated in a vibrant collection of earrings, each piece infused with the spirit of resilience and creativity that defined Melanie’s battle with endometriosis.

“The colour yellow, symbolising hope and awareness for this condition, features prominently in my designs, serving as a poignant reminder of the strength and beauty that emerge from adversity.

Looking ahead, my aspirations for Crumbs and Sparkles are filled with promise and ambition. I envision a future where my small business flourishes. The dream of owning a physical shop one day serves as a beacon of hope and motivation.”

Melanie will be showcasing her creations at the upcoming Herts Steam and Country Fair on the 1st and 2nd of June 2024.

Crumbs and Sparkles is located in Bragbury End.
