PE Apprenticeship Connect

Since its launch in 2011, Sporting Futures Training has been a beacon of hope and opportunity in the Stevenage community. Co-directed by Jill Eaton, MBE, and Jo Pountney, the organisation has supported over 2000 learners through sports, PE, health, and wellbeing apprenticeships. Their mission is simple yet profound: to raise aspirations and create opportunities for individuals of all ages to learn and grow through apprenticeships.

Why Stevenage?

Stevenage holds a special place in the heart of Educational and Sporting Futures (ESF). The organisation has grown from strength to strength, forming partnerships with local sports organisations and schools. This network extends across the country, but the roots remain firmly planted in Stevenage.

ESF’s connection with schools in Stevenage is particularly strong. Currently, apprentices are working in several local schools, including Giles Infants, Woolenwick Infants and Juniors, Giles Juniors, St Nicholas E of E School, Featherstone Wood, and Knebworth Primary School. These apprentices enhance the schools’ capacity to deliver classroom and PE, health, and wellbeing activities, providing valuable support to teachers. They also have apprentices working at Stevenage Football Foundation.

ESF recently attended Generation Stevenage Careers Fair, highlighting to school leavers an apprenticeship career pathway for anyone who has a passion for sport and enjoys working with young people.

The combination of ESF’s experienced team and their extensive school network enables them to deliver high-quality, school-based apprenticeships. These programmes consistently surpass national achievement rates, demonstrating the effectiveness of their approach.

The Value of Apprenticeships

“The value of apprenticeships is immense,” says Jill Eaton, MBE. Despite the challenges, it’s crucial to ensure that apprenticeships fulfil their purpose. Entry-level apprenticeships are particularly important as they offer young people a first step onto an employment pathway. For those with more experience, apprenticeships continue to raise aspirations and enhance opportunities.

ESF’s dedication to this cause has been recognised with an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ award. This accolade reflects the organisation’s commitment to excellence and the impact they have on their learners’ lives. The tutors at ESF are approachable, caring, and deeply committed to their students’ achievements.

Benefits of an Educational and Sporting Futures Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships with ESF offer numerous benefits. One significant advantage is work experience. Employers highly value practical experience, which isn’t something you can achieve solely through a degree. An apprenticeship provides the opportunity to gain this experience while also getting paid.

Funding is another key benefit. Schools can use government funding through the Apprenticeship Levy to pay for apprenticeship training. This funding can also be used to upskill existing staff, such as Teaching Assistants who are looking to learn new skills and apply them in their roles.

Recognising Excellence

Jill Eaton’s dedication to raising the profile of apprenticeships in Further Education and the skills sector was recognised with an MBE in June 2023. Awarded in the King’s First Birthday Honours List, this prestigious honour acknowledges her exceptional contribution to the field.

Jill received her MBE from HRH Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace, a moment that underscores the importance of her work and the impact of ESF. This recognition is a proud moment for Jill and the entire ESF team.

Expanding Horizons with Real Group Training

As a team of teachers in a training provider world, ESF continues to grow. Recently, they joined Real Group Training, an exciting new partnership that allows for a refreshed focus on developing and supporting SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) in the school setting. This collaboration will enable ESF to offer specialist, tailored apprenticeship training programmes, further expanding their reach and impact.

Sporting Futures Training has transformed the landscape of apprenticeship opportunities in Stevenage and beyond. Their commitment to raising aspirations and creating opportunities is unwavering. With a dedicated team, strong partnerships, and a clear vision, ESF continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of their learners.

If you’re in Stevenage or the surrounding areas and looking for a pathway that combines learning with practical experience, consider an apprenticeship with Educational and Sporting Futures. Their outstanding programmes and supportive environment could be the key to unlocking your potential.
