In the world of parkrun, there are those individuals who embody the spirit of community, dedication, and joy that make this movement so special. One such individual is Angus Kindley, a true legend in the Parkrun community who recently received the prestigious “Celebration of Parkrun Award” for his outstanding contribution over the years.

Regular Parkrunners will see Angus at the 4km mark, fondly named “Angus Corner”, where he is on hand to give encouragement at the top of an unforgiving hill. On the first loop, you best be ready to put on your best smile as the camera is out. Whereas on the second loop, you get your time which for many is a sign to either push for their PB or ease up and enjoy the rest of their race.

In an exclusive interview, Angus shared his journey into the world of running, describing how his passion for the sport began many, many years ago during his school days. His interest in running only grew stronger as he joined a club, and soon enough, the running bug had spread to his entire family – his wife Dorothea, daughter Claire, and son Angus all became active participants in the sport, representing Herts County in various distances.

Angus’s personal Parkrun journey started around 2013 when he began participating in these free, weekly 5km runs. With dedication and enthusiasm, he completed an impressive 152 parkruns before transitioning to a new role – volunteering. Reflecting on his decision, Angus expressed how rewarding he found the experience of supporting and encouraging fellow parkrunners.

“I took up running Parkruns from around 2013 and enjoyed it so much and managed to clock up 152 (still do the odd run but a bit old and creaky now) before moving onto volunteering rather than running. I found it very rewarding. The camaraderie and fun are a real boost.”

Witnessing individuals of all abilities coming together week after week to tackle the 5km challenge in all kinds of weather conditions left Angus in awe. He highlighted the inclusivity of parkrun, emphasizing that regardless of one’s fitness level or age, everyone is welcomed with open arms to this wonderful event every Saturday morning at nine o’clock.

“To see people of all abilities week after week, in all weathers, tackling 5 km is amazing.”

Angus also shared his fondness for themed Parkrun events, such as Christmas, Easter, NHS, and even Star Wars day on May the 4th. These special occasions bring out the creativity and spirit of participants who often dress up in themed costumes, adding an extra layer of fun and excitement to the runs.

“I particularly like the weeks when there is a theme – Christmas, Easter, NHS, Star Wars, when lots of participants make an effort to join in the fun and dress up in costume.”

As for the future, Angus expressed his desire to continue volunteering at Parkrun events, cheering on the happy parkrunners and contributing to the vibrant community that has become such an integral part of his life.

“Lastly, I hope to be volunteering for a while longer to cheer on the happy Parkrunners.”

Stevenage Parkrun Race Director Tony says: “Angus is a very special volunteer to us. This award is very well deserved”.

The award was presented by Annie Brewster, the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire. When presenting this award, Annie surprised Angus by reminding him that she used to run with his daughter many years ago.

“You didn’t recognise me did you?” exclaimed Annie before presenting her “living legend Angus with the award. The High Sheriff then stayed on to cheer on the Parkrunners round this two-loop course.

Angus Kindley’s story is a testament to the power of community, passion, and dedication within the Parkrun movement. His commitment to supporting others and spreading joy through running has not only earned him the admiration of his peers but also the esteemed “Celebration of Parkrun Award,” a well-deserved recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Parkrun community.
