Tucked away at 54 High Street in Stevenage Old Town, a new café is quietly transforming the local coffee scene with a dash of Scandinavian charm and a whole lot of heart. Helg Coffee & Bakery, founded by long-time residents Linda and Richard, is more than just a spot to grab your morning brew — it’s a cosy celebration of community, comfort, and of course, coffee.
A Dream Brewed Over Time
With years of experience in hospitality giants like Pret A Manger, Costa, and Starbucks, Linda and Richard always dreamed of doing things their own way.
“Over the years we had many discussions about potentially opening our own business,” says Linda. “We’ve lived in the Old Town for 16 years and believed 54 High Street was the perfect location and size for what we wanted to offer.”
Their love of quality coffee and independent cafés inspired Helg, which fittingly takes its name from the Norwegian word for “weekend.”

“We want to create a relaxing environment — a place that feels a bit like the weekend, with all the joy and comfort that brings,” adds Richard.
A Taste of Scandinavia (With a British Twist)
Helg’s menu is a delightful blend of Scandinavian flair and British classics. Think open-faced sandwiches, freshly baked pastries, and bacon butties — all served with a side of hygge.
“Our scandi-inspired bakes sit alongside favourites like avocado on sourdough. Plus, our milkshakes and frappes are especially popular with our younger guests,” says Linda. “And we haven’t forgotten our furry friends — dogs are very welcome here, and we’ve got treats and puppuccinos just for them!”
From locally roasted coffee and loose-leaf teas to jams and chutneys made by a friend from their Pret days, the couple prioritises local sourcing wherever possible.
A Place for Everyone
While the coffee and food are certainly the stars of the show, what truly sets Helg apart is its community spirit.
“Ever since we got the keys, we’ve been humbled by the support we’ve received,” Richard says. “Seeing the locals embrace hygge has been incredibly rewarding.”
Helg supports local schools like Woolenwick Junior, offers work experience to students, and is dog-friendly — making it a hub for walkers, families, and friends alike. The previously vacant building is now buzzing with life, benefiting both customers and neighbouring shops.
“We’re open to knit clubs, local meet-ups — anything the community needs, we’d love to support it.”
Looking Ahead: Pizza, Partnerships and More
The future looks delicious, with plans to offer evening pizza nights and even a touch of indulgence.

“We recently got our alcohol license, so you’ll soon be able to enjoy a little amaretto in your coffee or something special when dining in.”
Collaboration is also high on the menu. Helg is already working closely with other businesses in the Old Town network and events like the Easter Egg Hunt and Halloween Trick-or-Treat.
“We’re proud to have hired a team of locals and as parents of three, we’re especially keen to give back to the schools and maybe even feature some student-made recipes in the future!”
Why Helg?
In a town full of coffee shops, Helg isn’t trying to outshine the rest — just offer something a little different.
“We’re not looking to stand out,” Linda says with a smile. “Just to offer what we felt was missing on the High Street.”
So if you’re looking for comfort food, cosy corners, and a place that truly feels like the weekend — even on a Tuesday — pop into Helg. You might just find your new favourite spot.
