Stevenage is set to celebrate both its rich cricketing heritage and community spirit this Friday, 18th July, with the first-ever Roland Butcher 20/20 Trophy taking place at the Ditchmore Lane Cricket Ground. The match, which begins at 5pm, will see a Stevenage XI take on the Peter Allen Allstars in a special charity fixture in aid of the Stevenage Community Trust.
The event holds deep significance for the local cricket community. It pays tribute to Peter Allen, a beloved figure who joined Stevenage Cricket Club in 1958 after serving in the RAF. Over the next five decades, Peter became a cornerstone of the club, not only as a first-team player and long-standing captain but also through numerous committee roles, including Chairman.

One of Peter’s most impactful moments came when he spotted the talent of a young Roland Butcher and gave him his first chance at adult cricket at just 14 years old. Roland would go on to make history as the first Black player to represent England in international Test cricket.
Peter Allen sadly passed away last month, and the club has described him as “one of the most dedicated and influential members in the history of the Club.” His contribution to Stevenage cricket is impossible to measure, and Friday’s match is expected to be a touching tribute to his memory.
Proceeds from the evening will go towards the Stevenage Community Trust, supporting local projects and families in need. The event is open to all, and the club is encouraging as many residents as possible to come along, enjoy a great game of cricket, and honour a true local legend.
Whether you’re a cricket fan or simply looking to support a good cause, the Roland Butcher 20/20 Trophy promises to be an inspiring evening that brings together the Stevenage community.
