Dorney Lake Triathlon
What is an Olympic triathlon?
An Olympic triathlon is a multi-discipline endurance race that consists of three sequential events: swimming, cycling, and running. The distances for each leg in an Olympic triathlon are as follows:
- Swimming: 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles)
- Cycling: 40 kilometers (24.85 miles)
- Running: 10 kilometers (6.2 miles)
In the solo category athletes compete in all three legs consecutively, with the clock running continuously from the start of the swim to the finish of the run. Transition areas are set up between each leg, where participants quickly change gear, such as moving from swimwear to cycling gear.
A team triathlon, often referred to as a triathlon relay, is a variation of the traditional triathlon where a team of athletes competes together, with each team member completing one of the three triathlon legs: swimming, cycling, or running. The format allows participants to specialize in a particular discipline, making it a team effort rather than an individual endurance race.

The Stevenage Striders had an outstanding day of achievements, with club members excelling in both the 10km and half marathon events. Three Striders competed in the 10km run, all setting personal bests, and one of them secured a first-place finish in their age category. In the half marathon, eight Striders successfully completed the challenging distance, with two of them achieving personal bests, and one athlete also taking the top spot in their age category. The day’s successes were a testament to the team’s dedication and hard work.
Furthermore the weekend was packed with impressive achievements for the Stevenage Striders. Adam Hough took on an incredible challenge by completing three separate Spartan races. He started with the AG Pro Championship, finishing in an impressive 35:30, followed by the Sprint Open which is 5km with 20 obstacles with a time of 40:16, and capped off his marathon effort by conquering the Beast Open which is 21km with 30 obstacles in 2:31:21.
Francesca Maria also embraced the spirit of adventure by tackling the Tough Mudder South West, a gruelling 10-mile obstacle course. She successfully overcame 21 challenging obstacles and crossed the finish line in 3:45. Well done, Frankie!
