In 2025, The Hyde Bakers proudly celebrates 18 years at the heart of the Shephall community. First opened in 2007 by sisters-in-law Loraine and Tracey, both born and raised in Shephall, the bakery has become far more than a place to buy bread – it’s a local institution built on care, connection, and community.
When the owners of the former London Bread and Cake Company announced they’d be closing, Loraine and Tracey knew they had to step in. It wasn’t just any shop – it had always been a bakery, once known as Pearces, and it had always been part of their neighbourhood’s daily rhythm. More importantly, it meant the team who worked there, including Margret – Loraine’s mum and Tracey’s mother-in-law – would lose their jobs.
With young children attending local schools like Peartree and Barnwell, and a shared desire for a new challenge, the pair decided to take over the business. The Hyde Bakers was born, and 18 years on, it’s still going strong.

A Bakery with Deep Local Roots
“Shephall is such a unique area,” says Loraine. “There’s a lovely mix of people – older residents who’ve lived here for decades and younger families following in their footsteps.” Being based near several schools has meant the bakery quickly became a daily stop for students, parents, and teachers alike – whether for breakfast, lunch, or a friendly chat.
That local connection is a huge part of what keeps the bakery thriving. “So many people just pop in to say hello. It’s a proper community shop – and we feel lucky to be part of so many people’s daily routines.”
Giving Back – One Loaf at a Time
Over the years, The Hyde Bakers has become known not just for its delicious bread, cakes, and savouries, but for the way it gives back. From affordable kids’ meal deals to charity support, food donations, and buffet catering for local events, the bakery’s impact reaches far beyond the shop front.
“Having grown up here, it just feels natural to support the community,” Loraine explains. “It’s who we are – and always will be.”

Resilience Through the Years
Running an independent business isn’t always easy, and The Hyde Bakers has weathered plenty of challenges. From a decline in footfall due to shop closures and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, to rising costs and bills, staying afloat takes constant effort and creativity.
“We’ve had to adapt – trying out new products, keeping things fresh, and always looking at what our customers need. It’s not easy, but we’re still here, and still doing what we love.”
Looking Ahead
With Tracey stepping back a few years ago, Loraine continues to lead the bakery into its next chapter. Plans are in the works for a shop refresh and extended opening hours, but the focus remains the same: serving the people of Shephall with warmth, great food, and a strong sense of community.
