The Mayor of Stevenage, Jim Brown, recently attended Guru Charana Smaranam, a vibrant celebration of Indian classical dance and music that paid tribute to the rich cultural heritage of the arts and the dedication of teachers who pass these traditions down through the generations. Hosted in Stevenage, the event offered a unique opportunity to showcase the talents of young performers while fostering a deeper understanding of cultural diversity in the community.
The event featured mesmerising performances of Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance form originating from Tamil Nadu, and Carnatic music, South India’s traditional music style. Bharatanatyam is known for its intricate footwork, expressive hand gestures, and storytelling, while Carnatic music complements the dance with its complex rhythms and emotive melodies. Together, these two art forms created a spellbinding atmosphere.
Ms Kasturi’s students, from beginners to more seasoned performers, brought their boundless energy and dedication to the stage, captivating the audience with their enthusiasm and skill.
Mayor Jim Brown expressed his admiration for the event:
“Stevenage is enriched by its wonderfully diverse community, and events like Guru Charana Smaranam demonstrate the incredible talent and dedication within it,” the Mayor said. “The performances were outstanding, and the values of respect and gratitude celebrated here are ones we can all appreciate.”
