We had three races this week, ranging from 5k to 50k! We are particularly pleased with some personal achievements as well.

5k handicap: Race 3

On Tuesday 23rd, we had a whopping 32 club members racing in number three of our six part 5k handicap series. The fastest man on the night was Alex Wasley with a target time of 20mins and a race time of 18mins 33secs. The fastest woman was Kath Phoenix with a target time of 28mins and a race time of 24mis 32secs. Myles Hammersley’s strong run on race three has placed him top of the overall leaderboard.

The Rodent Wriggle

On Saturday 27th, Emma Mead conquered The Rodent Wriggle in 7hrs 12mins. This LDWA route is named after the way it meanders its way up the upper reaches of the River Rat. A gentle undulating scenic route through the Mid Suffolk countryside, with 10 historic churches along the 50k route. All are interesting in their own way, but of particular note are Great Finborough with its majestic spire, quaint thatched Harleston Church, and Rattlesden Church with its magnificent Angel roof. Completion of this race means that Emma now holds the club record for the 50k in her age category.

Chariots of fire 5k

On Sunday 28th, four runners travelled to Milton Keynes to mark the 100th anniversary of the “chariots of fire”. This 5k event was held by Enigma Running and was just shy of one loop around Caldecotte lake, conveniently finishing right outside the Caldecotte pub for a post-run beverage. Seventeen year old Alex Wasley “went for gold” and was not only the first Phoenix home, but also the first person to finish the race in 20mins 15secs. Next home was Melissa Tanti in 27mins 57secs, followed by Martin Wasley in 29mins 06secs and Stella Toresse in 29mins 55secs. Running in the summer sun was worth it for the fantastic olympic themed medal from Enigma running (and yes, they did play Vangelis at the finish line).
