The picturesque Chesfield Downs Golf and Country Club was abuzz with activity as it hosted the highly anticipated Les Ward’s Captains Charity Day. The event, dedicated to raising funds for Brain Tumour Research, proved to be an overwhelming success.
The charity golf day was especially poignant this year, as it was held in memory of Alex Pendleton and Abelardo ‘Abe’ Megias Hernandez, dear friends to many in attendance, who sadly passed away from brain tumours last year. The event drew a significant crowd, including both Abe’s wife Susie Hernandez, Alex’s wife Sarah Pendleton and his sister, two-time Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton. Victoria, despite her demanding schedule, made it a priority to join the event, underscoring the importance of the cause and her personal connection to it.
Chesfield Downs provided the perfect setting for the event. Known for its stunning views and challenging course, the golf club did not disappoint. Participants enjoyed a day of friendly competition and shared purpose, all under the banner of raising much-needed funds for Brain Tumour Research.
The day was filled with moments of laughter, reflection, and excitement. Participants ranged from seasoned golfers to enthusiastic beginners, all coming together with a common goal. The presence of local and national sponsors added a touch of prestige and support that greatly enhanced the event. A heartfelt thank you goes to Arsenal, Stevenage Football Club, Callaway Golf, TaylorMade Golf, PING Golf Europe, Wetherspoons Stevenage, Design it Dave, House Of Glam, Cara Ward, Kitchen Ergonomics, Hair by Lexie, Harmony & Balance, Annette Graham, and Willobys for their generous contributions. Their support helped raise an impressive total of over £11,000, with more than £7,000 collected on the day itself.
Pat and Les, the event organisers, expressed their gratitude, stating, “My Captains Charity Golf Day on 27th July, at Chesfield Downs Golf and Country Club, supported Brain Tumour Research”, Les tells us. “Remembering Abe Hernandez and Alex Pendleton who passed away from this illness last year. Their wives attended lunch as my guests. The whole day exceeded all my expectations. It was amazing. We raised in excess of £7k. A big thank you to all the members and guests. Plus our special guest, Victoria Pendleton.”
Pat also adds: “It’s the men’s section captain’s most important day of the year. We are taking our job in raising awareness and funds for the brain tumour community seriously. More needs to be done to help improve outcomes for people who are diagnosed, and their family members.”
The day wouldn’t have been possible without the remarkable efforts of all involved, from the dedicated volunteers to the generous sponsors and participants. Special mentions are due to Peter Harris, Dave Watson, Mark Smith, Pat Ward and Herts Design and Creative Services for their tireless work in organising the event and ensuring its success.
Emma Jolly, a representative from Brain Tumour Research highlighted the significance of such events, stating, “Men’s Captain, Les Ward chose Brain Tumour Research as his Charity of the Year after the loss of two people connected to the Club to the disease. Alex Pendleton, a keen golfer, who worked in the club shop in 2017, died from a glioblastoma (GBM) in June 2023. He was the twin brother of two-time medal-winning Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton, who attended the event. Around the same time, Les’ best friend lost his brother-in-law, Abelardo ‘Abe’ Megias Hernandez to the disease. We are incredibly grateful for the support from Les Ward’s Captains Charity Day. Events like these are crucial in helping us continue our vital research and move closer to finding a cure. Every donation brings us one step closer to our goal.”
The event concluded with an awards ceremony, celebrating the day’s top performers and recognising the collective effort of all involved. Congratulations to all the winners! Their skill and sportsmanship were evident, but it was the sense of community and shared purpose that truly made everyone a winner on the day.
