2025 will see The Hotel Cromwell in Stevenage Old Town celebrating 100 years!
100 years brings with it a lot of history:
The site where they currently sit once belonged to Oliver Cromwell’s secretary of state, Mr John Thurloe – whilst this was supposedly just a clerical position, he was to all intents and purposes, Cromwell’s spy master!
After the site was confiscated from Thurloe in 1660, it was reimagined and has been used as many things, until ultimately becoming ‘Cromwell Hotel’ in 1925.
After a few years, and despite strenuous objections, the Cromwell became the town’s principal residential hotel.
Its reputation continued to grow over the next 3 decades becoming known as one of the best hotels along the Great North Road.
By the 1970’s, the Cromwell was very much at the heart of the community and was the venue where the people of Stevenage went for any and all major events, be it a Wedding, Christening or Funeral.
Looking ahead to now – 2025 also sees them celebrating 10 years of The Distinct Group acquiring and running this beautiful hotel. After a meticulous and complete refurbishment, the hotel has been brought into the modern era whilst keeping its history and sense of community that has kept these doors open for the last 100 years!
The Hotel will be celebrating throughout the year so be sure to join them in The Old Town to mark the momentous milestone.
