Elegance China Hire: A Vintage Touch Born in Challenging Times

When the world paused during the Covid pandemic, many dreams were put on hold. But for one Stevenage resident, it marked the beginning of something beautiful. Elegance China Hire was born from uncertainty, inspired by a deep-rooted love for fine china and a spark of creativity.

“I thought, what have I got to lose?” recalls the founder. “People were ordering lovely afternoon teas to enjoy at home – perhaps they’d like the nice china to go with it.” And just like that, an idea bloomed.

Her passion for delicate china began back in her twenties, admiring elegant pieces in department stores. It reignited years later at her daughter’s afternoon hen tea, where the charm of mismatched vintage sets captured her imagination. One small job lot later — and a friend’s baby shower between lockdowns – led to her very first booking. From 40 teacup sets to a collection of over 250 trios, it’s been a remarkable five-year journey.

Growing the business wasn’t instant. Every reinvestment brought new additions to the collection, each one chosen with care. “No piece is the same. They all have a little history – just like the events they’re used for.”

One standout moment was supplying china for a grand winter wonderland wedding with 150 guests. The bride had a clear vision, and seeing the tables set just as she’d imagined was “incredibly rewarding.” It’s these personal touches that make Elegance China Hire special – being part of someone’s story, one cup at a time.

Afternoon tea has long been a beloved British tradition, but its resurgence at weddings and special events isn’t just about the tea. “Vintage brings comfort, connection, and character,” she explains. Popular period dramas like Bridgerton and Downton Abbey may have helped shine a spotlight on vintage style, but it’s the emotional warmth that keeps people coming back. “Each piece has a story – and together we create new ones.”

Elegance China Hire has brought its timeless charm to everything from baby showers to business launches. One particularly touching memory was providing china for an adoption party. “It was such a meaningful celebration – helping create a sense of beauty for a day that meant the world to that family. I’ll never forget it.”

As July marks five years in business, the founder isn’t planning a grand anniversary celebration — because every event already feels like one. “Whether it’s a wedding or a tea for two, I feel honoured to be part of it.”

Looking ahead, she plans to continue growing the collection, sourcing unique and characterful pieces that spark joy. At the heart of Elegance China Hire remains a simple yet powerful mission: to share beauty, joy, and a little nostalgia -one cup of tea at a time.
