Stevenage came alive this week with the colours and joy of Diwali, as residents gathered to celebrate the Festival of Lights. The event, hosted by the Stevenage Bengali Cultural Society, welcomed distinguished guests including the Mayor of Stevenage, Deputy Mayor Nazmin Chowdhury, Baroness Sharon Taylor, and Council Leader Richard Henry.
The Mayor spoke warmly about the significance of Diwali, a festival he first experienced fifty years ago. He shared his admiration for the celebration’s message of hope and positivity, reflecting on how Diwali symbolises the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance — ideals that resonate with everyone, regardless of cultural background.
The Mayor also congratulated Debu Bhowmick, Chief Coordinator of the evening, and expressed gratitude to everyone involved in organising the event. “This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate unity, diversity, and community spirit,” he said, acknowledging the dedication of the Stevenage Bengali Cultural Society in preserving cultural heritage for future generations.
The Society, known for organising cultural and religious events, aims to bring together the Bengali community and local residents, fostering a shared appreciation for tradition and community. The event not only highlighted the vibrant culture of Stevenage’s Bengali residents but also created a sense of togetherness across the town.
