Beryl, a company known for its commitment to sustainable transport, has launched a new e-bike scheme in Stevenage. The initiative, named after cycling legend Beryl Burton, aims to encourage residents and visitors to adopt a more eco-friendly mode of transportation.
The launch is part of a broader effort to make Stevenage greener, cutting down on traffic congestion and pollution. With 150 e-bikes available across 45 stations, the scheme makes it easy for people to get around the town without relying on cars.
At the heart of this launch is a shared vision between Beryl and Stevenage Borough Council. The project is partially funded by the UK government’s Towns Fund, secured by the Stevenage Development Board in 2021. This funding aims to boost Stevenage’s development, and the Beryl Bikes are just one piece of the puzzle.
To celebrate the launch, a special event was held at Event Island, where locals got a first-hand experience with the new e-bikes. Visitors were treated to test rides, advice from Beryl staff, giveaways, and discounts. The e-bikes are designed to be easy to use, whether for commuting or leisure. They’re particularly useful for climbing hills and travelling longer distances—perfect for Stevenage’s terrain.
Beryl’s CEO, Phil Ellis, spoke about how the scheme builds on the company’s nearly five years of experience in Hertfordshire. He explained how the e-bikes offer extra power, making them great for commuting and carrying heavier loads, like shopping. This flexibility makes e-bikes appealing for everyone, whether they are regular cyclists or haven’t ridden in years.
The e-bike hire system is straightforward. Users can download the Beryl app to locate the nearest e-bike station, pay for the hire, and unlock a bike. The app is available on both iOS and Android platforms, making it accessible to a wide audience.
The scheme is a welcome addition to Stevenage’s already extensive cycling network. Councillor Lloyd Briscoe, Cabinet Member for Economy, Skills, and Transport, expressed his excitement about the launch. He highlighted how Stevenage’s cycle network is perfect for these bikes and hopes that more people will use them to explore the town.
The introduction of Beryl e-bikes aligns perfectly with Stevenage’s vision for a cleaner, healthier future. Adrian Hawkins OBE, Chair of the Stevenage Development Board, emphasised how the town’s cycle network has always set it apart from other new towns. He sees the Beryl Bikes as a modern solution that addresses both leisure and commuting needs, while also improving air quality and boosting physical activity.
Beryl’s e-bike scheme has already shown its potential in other areas. For example, in nearby Watford, the bikes have been a huge success since their introduction in 2020. The scheme has saved nearly 55 tonnes of carbon emissions by replacing car journeys with sustainable, low-emission alternatives. Over 527,000 journeys have been made using Beryl bikes across several locations, demonstrating their positive impact on the environment.
The Beryl Rider Report from 2023 further supports the idea that e-bikes can inspire people to cycle more frequently. In the survey, 56% of respondents said they cycle more often after using Beryl e-bikes. The report also revealed that 21% of users had returned to cycling after a five-year break, while 3% said Beryl had encouraged them to cycle for the first time ever.
What sets the Beryl Bikes apart from other hire schemes is their focus on making cycling accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or just starting out, the bikes are designed to be user-friendly. The extra power from the electric motor makes them ideal for longer journeys or tackling hills, which might otherwise be a challenge.
Named after one of Britain’s most accomplished cyclists, Beryl Burton, the bikes represent more than just a mode of transport—they honour a legacy. Burton was known for her incredible endurance and achievements, including winning multiple world titles and breaking records that even men couldn’t surpass. Her story continues to inspire cyclists around the world, and it’s fitting that this new initiative in Stevenage carries her name.
As Stevenage continues to evolve with its £1 billion regeneration plan, the Beryl e-bike scheme is a significant step forward in promoting active, sustainable travel. The town’s extensive cycle network, coupled with these modern e-bikes, makes it easier for everyone to adopt healthier and greener transport habits.
For those interested in trying out a Beryl e-bike, it’s as simple as downloading the app and finding the nearest station. Whether you’re commuting, running errands, or exploring the town, these bikes offer a fun, efficient, and eco-friendly way to get around.
With this launch, Stevenage is not only looking to the future but also paying tribute to its past. The town has always been a pioneer in urban planning and transport, and the introduction of Beryl Bikes solidifies its position as a leader in sustainable mobility.
