When you think of live comedy, your mind might wander to the bright lights of London. But two Hertfordshire locals — Mark and Glen — are proving you don’t need to head to the capital to experience top-tier belly laughs. Instead, they’re bringing the best of British cabaret-style comedy right to the heart of Stevenage and surrounding towns.
A Friendship Forged on the Sidelines
It all started about eight years ago at Bedwell Rangers Football Club, where Glen was coaching a team that included both his son and Mark’s. The two quickly struck up a friendship, bonding over a shared love of music, comedy, and community.
“We’ve always got on well,” says Mark. “We became pals on the strength of our passion for entertainment.”
A Charity Night That Sparked Something Bigger
Their first foray into event organising was a charity comedy night for Bedwell Rangers — and it exceeded all expectations.
“It had a relaxed, homely feel,” says Mark. “People were enjoying themselves, the acts had a blast, and there was a real buzz. It felt different, in the best possible way.”
Glen adds, “It was amazing to see comedy generate not just laughter, but interest and fundraising for a good cause. That night really lit a fire under us.”

Curating Comedy Gold
You might recognise names like Clinton Baptiste and Eddy Brimson from the lineup — impressive bookings for a local event. So how do they pull it off?
Mark, a professional photographer with years in the entertainment industry, has worked at iconic venues like the 100 Club, snapping acts like ‘Barry from Watford’ and others well-known on the comedy circuit.
“These guys are comedians’ comedians,” Mark explains. “The kind of talent you’d normally only catch in London.”
Glen agrees. “We know what kind of night we want to create, and we’re lucky that the buzz from our earlier events has brought even more talent to our doorstep.”

Why Bring London Comedy to Hertfordshire?
The idea is simple: top-level comedy, without the London price tag or stress.
“People want to laugh, unwind, and not spend £200 on a night out,” says Mark. “In Stevenage, you know the venue, you know the people. It’s relaxed, fun, and you’re supporting local businesses along the way.”
Supporting the High Street
Mark is passionate about promoting local shops, bars, and eateries alongside their events.
“Stevenage Old Town reminds me of where I grew up — full of character and community spirit,” he says. “Whether it’s grabbing vinyl at Revolution Records, a trim at Old Town Barbers, or a bite at Misya or Tarla, there’s something special about spending locally.”
Glen agrees that the events are about more than just comedy — they’re about revitalising town life. “It’s about giving people a reason to explore the high street again.”
Audiences Loving Every Minute
So far, the feedback has been fantastic.
“We’ve had people raving about our Christmas show,” says Mark. “Cabaret comedy brings a mix you don’t get from a standard comedy night. It’s variety, it’s nostalgia, it’s full-on fun.”
And the excitement is only growing…
What’s Next?
The upcoming 6th June show promises another brilliant evening, with a stellar lineup including:
- Raymond & Mr Timpkins – Fast, funny, and crowd-favourites from BGT.
- Sol Bernstein – Described by Harry Hill as “my favourite comedian”!
- Tom Mones – A hilarious twist on Tom Jones, with hits like “What’s Up With My Pussycat?” and “The Green Green Grass of the Old People’s Home.”
- Hosted by Maureen Younger, fresh off an international tour and known for razor-sharp wit.
Overcoming Challenges
Of course, running shows comes with its hurdles — especially selling tickets.
“It’s nerve-wracking,” admits Mark. “You put in time, money, passion… but with help from ticket platforms, venues, and our community, we’re making it work.”
Want to Get Involved?
The team is eager to collaborate with more local businesses. From flyer support to social media shout-outs, there are plenty of ways to be a part of the Old Town Cabaret movement.
Follow them on Instagram at @OldTownCabaret and keep an eye out for their soon-to-launch website, which will feature a Friends of the OTC page — highlighting local spots supporting the scene.
As Mark puts it: “You can have an amazing, affordable night out — and still have money left to support brilliant local businesses. Everybody wins”
